Getting Started
Up and running in under 5 minutes.
Installation
ClearPath is launching on Chrome first, with full Firefox support to follow. The store listings aren't live yet — until they are, you can build it from source in a couple of minutes.
Chrome users: also works on Edge, Brave, Arc, and Opera.
First Use
After installing, pin the extension to your toolbar by clicking the puzzle piece icon in Chrome and pinning ClearPath. This puts the icon in your toolbar for quick access.
Click the ClearPath icon to open the control panel. From here you can toggle features on and off, adjust settings, and manage profiles.
🗓 Keyboard shortcuts for these actions are on the roadmap — for now, everything is accessed through the popup or the right-click menu.
Read Aloud
Read Aloud works immediately after installation — no setup needed.
To read selected text: highlight any text on a page, then right-click and choose "Read Aloud." The text will be spoken with each word highlighted as it's read.
To read the full page: click the ClearPath icon in your toolbar and press the Read Page button.
Tip: Open the popup settings to configure voice, speed, and pitch. Your settings are saved automatically.
Reading Mode
Reading Mode strips the current page down to its main content and applies your typography preferences.
To activate: click the ClearPath icon and toggle Reading Mode. You can adjust font family (including OpenDyslexic), font size, line spacing, and column width, and choose from four colour themes — Light, Dark, Sepia, and High Contrast. These preferences are saved to your browser account and sync across your devices.
Focus Tools
Three tools that help with concentration and reading flow, available anywhere Reading Mode is active:
- Reading ruler — a coloured band that follows your cursor to help you track lines
- Paragraph focus — dims everything except the paragraph you're reading
- Word complexity — underlines hard words with a simpler alternative shown on hover or keyboard focus
Toggle each one from the ClearPath popup.
Simplify
Simplify rewrites selected text in plain English using an LLM. It requires your own API key — there's no offline fallback for this feature.
To use: select any text, right-click, and choose "Simplify." A panel will appear with the rewritten text.
Set up your API key →Vocabulary
Double-click any word to see an instant plain-English definition — no API key needed, and it works fully offline using a bundled dictionary of over 21,000 entries.
To use: toggle Vocabulary on in the popup, then double-click any word on the page. Dismiss the definition with Escape or by clicking elsewhere.
Full vocabulary guide →Profiles
Profiles let you save a named set of accessibility settings and switch between them quickly. They're especially useful for SLPs and caregivers who configure ClearPath for someone else.
Profiles can be exported as JSON and shared — hand a profile file to a caregiver and they can import it with one click.
